The Thames Guardian, Oct. 18, says : ~—■' A petition has been left, at our <oij&e.e, numerously signed, praying his Excellency <he Governor to mitigate jthe sentence of five years' penal servitude, passed at Auckland in September, 1870, upon Francis Innis, late Deputy Assistant Commissary General, for ,erabezzling public moneys. The grounds set forth in the petition are the previous good character of the prisoner, and the ■fact of his having experienced extreme mental suffering since his incarceration." The Czar has gone to the Caucasus, And the Czarina to the Crimea.
