In our report of the rifle match yesterday, we omitted to mention that the ranges were 400, 500, and 600 yards. The Volunteer Artillery Band intend giving one of their popular openair concerts on the green opposite the Herald office at 7 o'clock this (Wednesday) evening. The following is the programme : —- March—" Jove" ... ... Gartner Selection —"Queen's Letter" ... Hobs Quadrille—"Aminia" Tinney Walt?;.—" The Angels Whisper " ... Jones Duett. —(2 cornets) "Norma" ... Bellini Galop—"Valentine" ... ... ... Mortis Belle Rifle shooting seems to be fast becoming a favorite pastime in Napier. We have had to record several matches lately, and \ye now learn that another friendly contest is on the tapis —this time between married members of the Napier JEtitie Volunteers and single members of the same corps. We have been requested to state that the mails for Europe, America, &c, &c , via San Francisco, will be forwarded hence per s.s. Ahurhi, on or about Friday next, which will be in ample time to catch the mail steamer proceeding from Wellington to the Manukau. The mail leaves Auckland on the 2nd November. Victoria appears to be looking to the possibility of an export as well as an import trade with America, for we observe that a ship has been placed on the berth at Melbourne for New York direct —the first for some years. Bret Harte, whose clever descriptive sketches and,equally clever verses have won for him hosts of admirers, not only in America, but also throughout Australia and in New Zealand, is now editor of the Atlantic Monthly, his salary being, it is stated, <£5,000 a year. The subsidy granted to Mr Hall's line of boats between Sydney and San Francisco is (the Melbourne Age U informed on good authority) to be discontinued. The Sydney Parliament voted a sum of money, and some instalments have been paid, but the purse-strings are now to b,e closed. Tasmania ? s whaling fleet now numbers twenty vessels ! The Derwent Hunter reached Port a few days back, after a seven months? cruise, with eighty-seven tuns! The quantity re ceived during the month is 169 tuns; and 102 tuns are known to be afloat. Seventy-nine little girls, brqught out by Miss Rye, have arrivecj. safe at Quebec, and there are already nearly 200 applications for them. According to tables recently prepared in the U.S. Census Office, the male citizens of New York city number 184,607, of whom 71,342 were born in America, and 113,265 abroad. Of the citizens of foreign birth, 55,447 were born in Ireland, 41,652 in Germany, and 16,066 in other foreign countries. Sir Walter Scqtfc was more amused than offended whej} his faithful Put die, after delighting him with the assurance that his novels wexe> invaluable to him, went on :—" For when I've be,en out all day hard at work, and come home tired, T take up one of your novels, and I'm asleep directly,"
