TO THE EDITOR OF THE HAWKE'S BAY TIMES.
Sir— The Daily Telegraph, in a leading article last evening, makes a remaik to the effect that, had a lighthouse been erected on Portland Island, the s.s. Star of the South need not, with ordinary care, have gone ashore on the beach within sight of this town. To any per son at all acquainted with the subject, such a statement has noi the slightest meaning. "Were the words "Ahuriri Bluff 1 ' substituted for "Portland Island," there would be some reason in thus adverting to the stranding of the Star of the South.—l am, Ac., W. S. B. Port Ahuriri, Oct. 20, 1871.
