The Rifle Volunteer Band performance in the Government lawn takes places this evening, at 5 o'clock, and as the weather bids fair to prove fine, will no doubt be largely attended. The Rev. W. M'Gregor will (D.Y.) conduct Divine service in the Port Church at 7 o'clock to-morrow (Sunday) evening. It will be seen by advertisement that the last of the Waipawa readings for the season will take place in the Court-house, Waipawa, on Tuesday evening next. 17th inst The p.s, Luna had rather a long passage hence to Wellington. She left here at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday, and did not reach her destination until 11.30 last night. The favorite steamer .Napier is announced to steam for Poverty Bay and Auckland at 6 o'clock this evening. Those who are in the habit of frequenting the Napier Athenaeum during the day time, will observe by advertisement that the library and reading room will in future be opened at 10 a.m , instead of 2pm, as heretofore. From Wairoa, we regret L.o Jearnthat all hopes of the ketch Midlothian being iioated off are at an end, that vessel having entirely broken up. The narrow guage has triumphed in Victoria. The Victorian Ministry has finally resolved that in all future railway construction to adopt a 3 feet 6 inch guage. The wife of Marshal Ganrobert has: been sued for damages by the German authorities for having written a letter, characterised by them as libellous, to the London times, concerning the treatment of Frencli prisoners in Germany. The Southern League (a Dunedin paper) has the following :—Not withstanding all the expenses of the Native Olrice, there is no legal machinery for preventing a white pedlar from selling on credit, at usurious profit, a host of luxurious articles to poor old semi idiotic Maori women.
