The anniversary ball of the Napier Volunteer Artillery and the Hawkje's Bay Yeomanry Cavalry took place in the Oddfellows' Hall last njght. The attendance, we hear, was not so large as might have been expected, but the threatening appearance of the weather during the early part of the evening no doubt deterred many from being piesent. The Hall was very tastefully decorated, and the arrangements as a whole were excellent. The Wellington Independent of yesterday says :—-A paragraph appears in the Evening Post of yesterday, in which ib is said, with regard to the Seventy Mile Bush :—" Matters were progressing very favorably, and there seemed every reason to believe that for the sum of £30,000 this valuable block —which for railway purposes will be absolutely necessary—a* ould have very shortly passed into the hands of the colony. But a stone has been thrown, and rippled the befoie clear face of the negotiations. Mr John Martin has offered the natives several thousands of pounds more than the Government bid for their land, and of course that has stopped matters." We are authorized to say that there are no grounds for such a statement, no such offer as that referred to having been made.
