WELLINGTON. Thursday, Sept. 28. The statement of the Hon, the Minister for Public Work** (Mr Gisborne) occupied two hours last night. Among the Road Works proposed in the North Island are the further progress of the main lines from Waikato via Taupo to Napier; Taupo to Tauranga; road through Seventy-Mile Bush, connecting the East and West Uoasts; Manawatu to Masterton; Wanganui to New Plymouth ; Wanganui to Taupo; Waipa to Raglan; Qpotiki to Poverty Bay; Ohjwa to Waikarimoana, and thence to Wairoa. The nominated immigrants during the present year are a,s follows :- Hawked Bay 500, and 100 assisted immigrants. Among the proposed railways is one from Napier to Ruataniwha. John Hunter of the hard-labor gang, attempted to escape to-day. The Government stated in the House that only one Swedish immigrant left the colony. Mr Gisborne, in his statement, bore testimony to the tact and ability with which Mr Orinond and Mr Locke conducted the negotiations for the purchase of the Forty Mile Bush.
