The Palmers ton correspondent of the Wellington Independent writes as follows in a late issue of that journal : T regret to ■ray that since last writing, a few of the Scandinavian immigrants have had a taste of one of the drawbacks to which colonial life in the bush is so subject, namely, fire. One poor fellow has lqst his all; and several others, by the destruction of another whare, have lost the result of several months' labor. A sad accident has just occurred to a Dane named Braunsted. The unfortunate man was engaged in felling a tree, and accidentally got his leg cut clean off a little below the knee. The poor fellow has just been biought home, having been carried a distance of two miles, and is in a very exhausted state. The doctor, unfortunately, is away down the tram road, some eight miles from here. A messenger has been despatched with all haste for him, and it is to be hoped the bad state of the road will not delay him too long. Another accident has occurred at the rapids, near the Gorge, by which a canoe-load of tools and sundries, recently arri\ ed per Mosquito, from Wellington, have been upset in the river. The tools, I understand, belonged to Messrs Finlayson, Mathieson, & Co, who have a contract on the Napier side of the Gorge.

A gentlernan ayked an Irishman to do him a small service, on the completion of which he rewarded Pat very liberally. Pat immediately addressed him thus :—" Arrah, by the powers, I have a good mind to hire you for my master!"
