In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, two drunkards were lined 5s each.
The Napier Artillery "Volunteer Band gave the first of a series of openair concerts last evening, on the green opposite the Heiald qmce. The weather could not have been finer—a clear, cloudless sky, with bright moonlight, and little or no wind. The attendance on the ground was large, and the music seemed to be generally well appreciated.
The total strength of the Yolunteer force in Hawke's Bay on the 31st March last was 232. Of this number, 68 men (belonging to 2 corps only) passed through class firing, the final classification being—Third class, 31 ; second class, 28 ; first class, 9 ; marksmen, 5. In Otago, we observe, out of 524 men who passed through class firing, no fewer than 300 got into the first class, 209 of that number qualifying themselves for marksmen. The latest returns show the total strength of the Yolunteer force in Great Britain to be as follows :—B4l Light Horse, 37,575 Artillery,' 7,0Q9 Engigineers, 148,182 Foot Rifles, and 196 Mounted Rifles. Total, 1 93,893. The new Constitution of the King dqm of Fiji comes into force on the Ist of October next. C: . ......
It is a curious fact that during the ravages of the plague in Buenos Ayres, pearly depopulating the city, not one of the 300 grave-diggers employed died of the fever.
Of the first number of the household edition of the works of Charles Dickens 80,000 copies have been issued. The first part has also been published; 80 quarto pages, with ton illustration-*, and chapters, of " Oliver Twist," for 6d!
