The following report of the brigantine Amherst's passage from Newcastle, N.S.W., to this port has been kindly furnished to us by Captain Hair:—The Amherst left .Newcastle for Napier on the 31st August, having on jjoard 235 tons of coal, consigned to Messrs. Watt Brother*. Experienced light variable winds with thick weather for the first three .days. Strong S. and S.W. gales were then encountered until the Bth inst., on which day the land was made off Cape Farewell. Passed through Cook's Straits on the Uth, with a N.W. wind and thick weather. From thence until arrival in Hawke's Hay early yesterday morning, N.W\ » nd N.N.W- gales were met with, veering into S.W- towards the latter end. Brought up in Ahuriri roads at 2 p.m. yesterday, and was to have been brought inside this evening. Tlie following accidents befell the Amherst during her voyage :—On j,he sth inst., a fresh S.W. gale blowing, with a mountainous sea, shipped a heavy sea over the stern, which washed overboard the man at the wheel and the wheel itself. Luckily, jthe man got caught in the bight of a rope which was trailing in the water, and was thus rescued from a watery grave, as nothing could have been done to have saved him. Immediately the accident took place, sail was shortened and the ship hove-to to repair the wheel, which occupied four hours, when she proceeded on her voyage. 6a the morning of the 12th inst, being then off Castle Point, waß Btruck by a violent squall from N.JS.W., the effects being the loss of her foretopgallant mast and royal, foretopmast and maintopmast. Yesterday afternoon, off 4-huriri Bluff, had her jib carried away by a sudden S.W. squall.

The schooner Crest of the Wave, Capt. A» Bell, from Dunedin, arrived here at noon toijiay, after an average passage of 7 days. She brings a full general cargo, comprising 372 pkgs. and 69 L bags. The Colonial Q-overnrnent steamer Luna, Capt. Fairchild, haying the European and American mails via San Francisco, per p.s. Nebraska, arrived atTauranga from 4-H°kland at 12.8 p.m. yesterday, a«d hit for this port at 9 o'clock last night. Her arrival here may, therefore, be looked for to-morrow mpming. She will proceed on to Wellington shortly gfter arrival. Wellington papers by the overland mail announce that the steamer Kangatira has been hauled alongside Pilcher's wharf for the purpose of receiving the new boiler which has )?een specially made for her by Mr Seager. H.M.S. Basilisk left Wellington for kelson on the 4th instant.
