Amherst, brigantine, from Newcastle Three Brothers, sphqoner, from Arapa- • wanui Greenwich, cutter (lightering) Mahia, cutter (lightering) Una, steam launch The brigantine Amherst, Capt. Hair, from Newcastle, N.S.W., arrived in the roadstead at 2 o'clock this afternoon, bringing a full cargo of coals consigned to Mr LeQuesne. Whilst off Ahuriri Bluff, workiug up the Bay, the wind, which had been blowing from the N.N.W., suddenly chopped round to the southward, and blew with great violence for some time, during which the brigantine had her fore-topmast carried away. The Amherst left this port on the 3rd August, for Newpastle, and has thus completed the passage there and back within five weeks. The ketch Midlothian, with a general cargo for Mahia, sailed last night,—Captain Ross, pf the schooner Three Brothers, proceeding in her as pilot. By private telegram, we learn that the brigantine Esther is on the berth at Wellington for this port, and woiild probably leave there to?moryow. We are informed that the schooners Saucy Lass and Leetitia, from Auckland via Mercury say, may ijoth be Rooked for here shortly, cargoes of timber. Messrs Laird, Brothers, qf the Birkenhead Ironworks, have just launched an immense iron screw steamship, which has been constructed for the " K ational" Company, and which it is proposed shall run between Liverpool and New York. This ship, which has been christened the Spain, has four masts and two funnels, is 437 feet in length, 43 feet breadth of beam, 28 feet 8 feet depth ol hold from the main deck, and 4,000 tpns burden, builders' measurement} it has acpomuiodajiion for 120 first-class passengers, and 1,400 steerage. The engines of the Spain are the largest ever constructed on the compound principle, and are of jpO-h p. nominal, the main cylinder being 106 in. diameter, and 4ft, j3in. stroke. The boilers have been tested to l§Qlb pressure, and will be worked at about 751 b to the square inch. Two new large iron screw steamships of great capacity and tonnage b,ave just been added to the P. and O. Company's seet, and these will shortly be followed by three others, all in advanced state of progress., making five of the finest steam vessels afloat. Eaph steamer is of about 3,750 tons register, and lifted with engines of 600 horse power the length about 380 ft., breadth of beam 42ft. pin., and depth from top of floor to spar deck 33ft. f ihey are named respectively the Khedive, Indus, Mirzapore, Pekir., and Agra.
