Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 1871.
Travelling by Cobb & Co. line of coaches in this Province is remarkably cheap now a-days. A. Peters and Co. announce that their fares between Napier and Waipawa are 2s 6d each way, and between Napier and Waipukurau, 3s 6d each way. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning the following civil cases were heard :—Baldwin v. O'Donnell.— A claim of .£ll 13s for wages.—Judgment for amount claimed and costs, 19s. Yates v. Dinwiddie.—Plaintiff, the Secretary to the Oddfellows' Lodge, claimed £4 4s for the use of the Oddfellows' Hall on the occasion of the late volunteer ball— <£3 13s 6d for the night of the ball, and 10s 6d for the night previous, when the committee were making their preparations. The first item was admitted, and the amount paid into court, but the item of 10s 6d was disputed, the defendants maintaining that on previous occasions no charge had been made for the use of the building while preparations wore going on. The plaintiff said that in such cases it had been granted a« a favor, and not as a right.—The worthy magistrate said that in this case it was a matter for regret that a distinct understanding had nob been arrived at in the first place —Judgment for amount claimed, and costs--, 9s. Milham v. M'Dowell. A claim of ,£1 ss, balance of an old account for potatoes. The defendant pleaded a partial set off for hire of horse and harness for one day, which was allowed. —Judgment for 18s, and lis costs,
