Star of the South, Capt. Holmes, left Auckland on Wednesday last, 23rd inst, at 2 p.m., for the Bay of Islands, where she arrived iat 2 o'clock the next morning. Shipped 100 irons coal, and took her departure for Napier at JO o'clock the same night. Experienced fresh southerly wind to the East Cape, which was rounded at 5 o'clock on Saturday mornjng. From thence to Portland Island, light "and variable winds; and from thence to port heavy N.W. gale. Brought up in the roadstead at 0.30 am. yesterday, having made a very good run °f 50£ hours from the Bay of Islands. The distance from the East Cape to Napier was run in 19£ hours.—The Star will steam for the Thames and Auckland at 3 p.m to morrow. The schooner Lpetitia, Pavis, master, left Mercury Bay at li a.m. on Wednesday last, 23rd inst. Rounded the East Cape at noon pn Thursday. Passed Portland Island at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and arrived in the roads at 8 o'clock the same night. Experienced strong &.W. and N.W. wnids throughout. She was the bearer of 30,000 feet of sawn timber and 12,000 shingles, consigned to Mr LeQuesne. The barque Santiago, from this port, arrived at London on the 4th July, having been 114 days on the passage. The following report of the brig Maggie's last passage from Newcastle, N.S.W., to this port has been kindly furnished to us by Captain Arnold :—Left Newcastle at 4.30 p.m. on the 11th August, with light N.W. winds, which died away into calms, and light baffling winds till the 14tb, when a f|ne breeze from the westward was experienced, which lasted to the 16th, when it changed suddenly to the eastward, and ranged from S.E. to N.E., occasionally rising to a severe gale. On the 18th inst., exchanged signals with the barque John Knox, bound to the westward. On the 22nd, the wind, which had continued pretty steady from the N.E., chopped suddenly to f;he S.W. Made the land at Cape Farewell on the morning of the 23rd inst. Experienced a N.W. gale through Cook's Straits, which held till the yessel was off Cape Palliser. Passed a large iron barque off Wellington heads at 8 a.m. on the 24th, head reaching to the westward. From Cape Palliser to Napier the wind varied from S. to N.W., blowing at times a complete hurricane. Passed Cape Kidnapper at 2 p.m. on Friday, 25th inst., and came to an anchor in th,e roadstead at 10 p'clock the same night. The 8 8. Napier was to have left Auckland pn Wednesday evening last, with a cargo of store cattle for Taurarga. She would return to Auckland, and then leave lor poverty Bay and Napier. Her arrival here may be looked |br about Wednesday or Thursday next. The barque Alice, from London, arrived at Auckland on the 19th inst. The schooner Dunedin, from Oamaru, with a cargo of flour and bran, arrived at Auckland on the 19th inst. During the passage, when pff Napier, she encountered a heavy gale, by which two men lost their lives. The schooner phipped a heavy sea, which carried overboard Jphn Brown, the cook, and James Dick, able seaman, who were never afterwards seen,
