HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1871.
The English Mail via Suez will be due in Melbourne to morrow. The monthly inspection parade of the Napier Rifle Volunteers and the Rifle Cadets took place on Olive Square at 7 o'clock this morning. Both corps were well represented, there being a better attendance of the former company than we have seen for some time. The Rifles were exercised in the new skirmishine; drill and in marching. The splendid band of the company was in attendance, and played some favorite airs. During the parade, badges for proficiency in rifle shooting were presented to Colorsergeant Fielder and Corporal Spiller, f>y Major Withers, in a few appropriate Volunteer Stubbs was also entitled to a badge, but he is absent from the province. The Rifle Volunteer anniversary ball sakes place to-night, in the Oddfellows' Hall, and, as far as can be at present judged, bids fair to be a «reat success. The Napier. Volunteer Artillery monthly inspection parade was to have place on Ciive Square at 4 this af^erno.on.
The tea meeting last night in the new Methodist Church was very successful. The provisions were abundant and excellent, and a very pleasant evening was passed. The meeting was addressed by the Chairman Ml* Rhode:?, the Rev. Mr Redstone, Mr Colenso, Mr Johnston, and Mr Moore. The proceedings were diveryifiecl by some excellent music. Votes of thanks to the speakers acid the ladies were passed, and the proceedings were closed by the benediction; —Our report is unavoidably ljeld oyer. Our contemporary, the Herald, in this morning's issue, mentions, foi the information of its readers, that a writ in the Supreme Court of this colony has been issued against the proprietors of that journal for libel. The plaintiff is Mr Purvis Russell, sheepfarmer, of "Waipukurau, and the damages are laiJ at £I,OOO. The action arises out of an article which appeared in the Herald of the 18th May last, under the head of " Native Lands Frauds Prevention." Indications of an early spring are apparent. We observe that in several gardens in and around Napier fruit trees of various kinds are already in full bloom. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, judgment was given in rhe adjourned case of Stuart & Co. v. Bell. The matter in dispute between the parties was simply two items of £l3 each, alleged to have been paid by the defendant, which the plaintiff would not admit, though receipts were produced. Mrs Bell deposed that she had paid one sum of £l3 in bank notes to Messrs. Stuarts manager in '.he street. This *vas denied by the plaintiff. The other item of <£l3 was shown to have been paid into Mr T. Bell's account, and not that ot the defendant. His Worship considered that the first item of ,£l3 had been paid, especially as it was acknowledged in a subsequent statement of accounts furnished by the plaintiff. The second item could not be allowed, having been paid into a different account. —■ Judgment was therefore given for £5 Is 4d, with costs and expenses of adjournment, amounting to £2 ss.
