In the District Court this morning, Mr Lee applied for a .certificate in the case of Charles Duntoy, a bankrupt. Mr Stedman opposed the .discharge on behalf of Mr Bishop and Mr Morley, two of the creditors. —Certificate grant ed. Wallace v. Tanner.—A claim of ,£3l 10s for wages, at the rate of 30s per week. The defendant disputed the .claim, and brought evidence to prove that 25s per week was the rate agreed on. His Honor considered that the plaintiff was in error in his claim, and gave judgment for £26 ss, but without costs, as that amount had been offered to the plaintiff and refused. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Messrs. Stuart & Co. sued Mrs Bell for the sum of .£9 15s 7d. Mrs Bell put in a set off of over .£3O, which was beyond the jurisdiction of the Court. The plaintiff produced a receipt for ,£1.5, one of the items in the ,set-off, and certain other reductions having been made, it was brought within the power of the Court. The amended set-off then amounted to £lB Is 4d, and consisted partly of receipts for items in Messrs. Stuart & Co.'s account, which receipts were produced in Court. The plaintiff contended that these receipts had been given in error, and that two of them were for one amount. —The case was adjourned to to-morrow. We are informed that the outward mails for Europe, America, &c, via San Francisco, will close on Sunday next, 6th inst., at 8 p.m. Potatoes would appear to be scarce in Newcastle, N.S.W. The Maggie, a short time ago, look over a considerable quantity, and now another lot is about to be sent away by the Amherst. We learn that the small detachment of Armed Constabulary which arrived from Wellington a few days ago by the Lord Ashley, are about to be despatched to Wairoa by the schooner Hero, which vessel will leave in a day or two. The death is announced of Mr Edward Cooke Donovan, tbe Telegraph Engineer of the Cook's Straits Cable. The deceased gentleman, who had many friends in this Colony, died suddenly "in harness 1 ' near Shanghai. A singular feature appeared in the case Walker y. Tanner in the District Court. The plaintiff not only admitted that he opened a sealed letter, containing an account of his time, addressed by the overseer to Mr Tanner, but he actually produced the said account in Court, and handed it to the Judge !
