TOTAL ABSTINENCE MEETING AT WAIPUKURAU.
A pfbliq meeting was held at Waipukuraa on the evening of Friday last, July 7, under the auspices of the Rose of Sharon Tent, LO.R, of Waipawa, for the purpose of explaining the principles of the Order, and advocating the cause of total abstinence generally. The Rev. R. Taylor, C.R, took the chair, and opened ihe meeting with a few suitable remarks. A letter was read from the Rev. D'Arcy Trvine, expressing his sympathy with the objects of the meeting, and explaining his reasons for not- being present. - The following resolutions were then unanimously adopted : 1 That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that a Temperance Society and Band of Hope should be formed at Waipukurau 2. That it is desirable that a Tent of the Independent Order of Uechabites be opened at Waipukurau; 3. That some persons be appointed to obtain signatures to a petition to the General Assembly in favor of a Permissive Liquor Bill. 4. That a committee be appointed to carry into effect the above resolutions. Several very excellent speeches were made in favor Of these resolutions, and at the close of-the meeting a number of those present signed the pledge. A requisition to the District for the dispensation to open the Tent having been prepared was sent round for signature, and we believe the necessary number of signatures were obtained, so that in a few weeks we may to see a Tent opened at Waipukurau. Great credit is due to the Rose of Sharon Tent for the efforts they are making to spread the principles of their Order ; and the benefit they have already conferred upon the district is almo»t incalculable. We wish them every success in their laudable enterprise.
