By our Wellington files we learn that the hon. Mr Fox had engaged to lecture on the subject of temperance at the Town Hall, Greytown, on the evening of Monday, July 3 ; at the Town Hall, Carterton, on July 4; and at Masterton on July 5. A correspondent of the Wairarapa Mercury says that the Mas? terton lecture will be the 379th the hon. gentleman has gh en on this subject. We (Wairarapa Mercury) are in?formed that on the arrival of the last batch of the Swedish immigrants at Wellington, a settler in the Wairarapa endeavored to obtain the services of a married couple for a station in the dis - triet. The wages demanded, .£BO year, were, however, so exorbitant as to preclude their being engaged. Verily the Swedes appear to have a very good idea of the value of their labor, more especially when it is taken into consideration that it will be necessary ta engage an interpreter as well. The Evening Post, July 3, says : We learn by private advices from Wanganui that the insolvency of Mr Perham, barrister of that place, has created a profound sensation, and that some of the creditors are much aggrieved. Mr Perham held ihe appointment of coroner for the district, and did a fair conveyancing business. The creditors have declined to hold further meetings, and Mr Perham, we understand, contemplates going through the Court. The liabilities are above .£SOOO. The Otago Daily Times of the 28th ult. says :" A man named Hugh M'Donald was drowned whilst attempting to cross the Waitaki on horseback at Ivauro on the 18th instaat. The deceased, we learn, crossed the river on, horseback on the 16th inst., the horse which carried him swimming across. On the 18th inst, as he wanted to go from the Canterbury to the Otago side, he attempted to cross again, although, his mate did all he could to dissuade him from doing so, it being dark at the time when he started to cross. Shortly after he had got into the main stream, his mate, who was on the bank, heard him say, ' The mart) is drowning with me,' and, almost immediately after, " I'm sinking myself.' 11 being dark at the time, his mate could not see what had occurred. Next morning the mare was found drowned, but no trace of M'Donald could he get, though a party of men with a boat searched along the liver for about 6 miles, The " Countess of Derwentwater "' has been adjudicated bankrupt at Newcastle County Court, on a petition signed by Earl Camperdown and Sir Spencer Robinson, two of the Lords of the Admiralty. Personal service of summons was dispensed with. The " relics " of the " Countess," which have been for some time in an unoccupied house in Murtou Street, Sunderland, have been taken pesse.ssion of in con? sequence ot " her ladyship's" bankruptcy. The articles will probably be offered for hand fide sale shortly.

The Law Times believes the day is net far distant when silk gowns and coifs will disappear, and all advocates stand on an equal footing.
