The annual meeting of members of the Napier Athenaeum and Mechanics' Institute will bo held this evening, at 8 o'clopk. We hear that the Napier Rifle Volunteers intend celebrating their eighth anniversary by a ball, to take place on the 2nd August. We have been requested to announce that the Rev. R. Taylor will (D.V) hold Dhine service next Sunday as follows :—At Kaikora at 11 a.m., at Waipawa at 3 p.m., and at Waipukurua at 6 p.m. The sittings of the Court of Appeal at Wellington were to have commenced on Monday last, but owing to the absence of the Chief Justice it was expected that the Court wouid immediately adjourn till the 10th inst. Amongst the cases down for hearing is one of local interest—Buchanan v. Watt, We would remind our country read- , ers that the mails for Europe, &c, via California, close at the Chief Post Office, Napier, at 8 p.m. on Sunday next. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning James Lewis, the little boy charged with larceny, was brought up on remand, and further remanded to Thaisday, the 13th inst. Freight from Wellington to this port by the s.s. Rangatira is now, we are informed, «£1 per ton. The New Zealand Gazette of the 30th June, which consists of sixteen pages, is entirely occupied by tables showing the results of the late Colonial Prize Firing. A very interesting meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society was held in the Colonial Museum, Wellington, on the Ist in,?t. A petition for the commutation of the sentence of death passed on the man Muirhead, for the murder of" G-il-fillan at Waikato, is being signed in Auckland, and already contains 1,233 signatures. The United States navy s as shown hy a return just published, consists of 179 ships, of which 51 are classed as ironclads, and 29 tugs. Of the total number on the Navy List, only 40 are in commission. A Tokomairiio paper anticipates that in a year or two apples will be as cheap as potatoes in the southern districts of Otago province. Oats in Oamaru, at latest dates, were quoted at from Is 10d to 2s per bushel, the latter price being obtainable for good milling only. The Colonial Museum, Wellington, was for the first time lighted up with gas on the night of the Ist inst. The New Zealand Mail (Wellington) strongly advocates the introduction of a Property Tax. It is rumored (says the Nelson Examiner), upon we know not what authority, that in the choice of the next School Committee and Central Board of Education, a quiet but determined attempt is to be made to return men who will give as much, as possible of a religious turn to the public school teaching, by introducing the use of the Bible as a school-lbook. The Rev. J. Cosh, Wesleyan Minister, in a serman lately delivered by him in Auckland, stated that there were persons there who borrowed money or neglected or delayed paying their tradesmen's bills in order to speculate in scrip. Such persons the rev. gentleman declared to be " little better than common thieves."

We (Dunedin Star) are glad to find that growing interest appears to be taken in chess. It is expected that the Dunedin club will number 50 members in a very short time. There is scarcely a night on which they meet that additions are not made. Should this number be reached the club will be the strongest in New Zealand, probably scientifically as, well as numerically.
