"A meeting was held on Tuesday evening last, at the Court house, Waipavva, its object being to inaugurate the Band of riope and Total Abstinence (Society and Penny Headings The chair was taken by the Rev. R. Taylor, President of the Society. After the meeting had been op-ned by a temperance song, Mr J. Harding, the first speaker, explained briefly the objects of the Band of Hope. The Chairman then followed with a lew remaiks on the same subject, explaining also the reason why the two societies (Band of Hope and Total Abs inenee) were united into one. Mr Levy then addressed : !he children, showing them how they might become teetotal rs Mr R. Hauling next addressed the meeting on total abstinence and the Bible, pointing out that the Bible, when lightly understood, does not encourage drinking, but speaks strongly against it. The meet ing was enlivened at intervals by temperance songs by Messrs. Levy and Grenside. On the whole a pleasant, and, we trust, profitable evening was spent.
