Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14,1871,
The remainder of the report- of the cane against Mr Lemon (the first part of which appeared yesterday) is held over until to-morrow.
By the Napier this morning, our Auckland files exiend to the 10th inst. The most important items of news have been anticipated by telegraph. We regret to notice in our English summary to day, the announcement of tlie death of a veteran in science, Sir John Herschell.
We (Oaraaru Times) understand that during the forced cruise of the Flying Squirrel, which was blown out from Kakanui Roads last week, the crew ran so short of provisions as to be compelled to devour their cat and dog. We believe it is a general practice for the small coasting craft to leave port with only a few loaves of bread and a little fresh meat on board, and of course wholly unprepared to remain long at sea. Experience should teach the wisdom of making preparation against- the vessel being kept out of port for a long time, and unless it does, we shall one day have to read a tale of starvation, with all its attendant horrors. New York Customhouse statistics show that during ihe late European war 18 cargoes of fire-arms, valued at 13,800,000 dollars, were shipped from the United States to France. There are are now 133 steamers engagad in the trade between Europe and the United States. Of these vessels 101 are British, and not one hailing from America.
The New Zealand Herald, June 10, says : —" The Bank of .New Zealand shipped on board bl>e s.s, James Paterson yesterday, for Sydney, 5 boxes containing 7,765 ozs. Tdwis. 12gi\s. of gold, value ",£32,300."
