PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
TUESDAY, MAY 23, 1871. The Council met at 3 p.m. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Marine Parade. Mr Rhodes said that before the business was proceeded with, lie would refer to a matter which in some way concerned the Council. Some time ago, a portion of the Murine Parade was enclosed and planted with trees at public expense. During the last three days he had seen horses in the enclosure, and thought the matter should be placed in the hands of the police. Mr Sutton believed the member for Clive was right in saying this ground had been planted at public expense; but the expenditure had never received the authority of the Council, and appeared to have been undertaken to beautify the Club. Rental of Government Lands. Mr Maney, pursuant to notice, asked his Honor the Superintendent— Whether it is the intention of the Government to re-consider the question of leasing the Government lands in the northern part of the province. •> —Many lands in this Province, leased in times of prosperity from the Government, did not now yield sufficient to pay their rent, Tins remark applied spec.a'ly to the Upper Mohaka district, and that part of the country known as Whitmore's run, where the country was very rough an,d broken, His Honor was quite aware that se veral holders of land in these districts had given up their runs because they were losing money. If the member for the Country Districts woukj tying in a Bill to these lands brought under the land regulations, it would have his (Mr O.'s) support,
