TnE favorite stock steamer S.ar of the South Capt. Holmes, left Auckland at 3 p.m. on Wednesday last, 17th inst., with a strong S.W. breeze. Passed Cape Colville at 7.30 p.m., and rounded the East Cape at 2.30 p.m. on the following day. At 10 o'el ck the same night, owing to a strong southerly wind and sea, rutin to Toloj.a Bay for shelter. Proceeded on her voyage at 6 o'clock on Friday morning. When nearly off Portland Island she was again compelled to put hack—seeking shelter this time at Wangawehi. Remained there until 2 p.m. yesterday ; resumed her voyage at that hour, and arrived in the roadstead at 12 o'clock last night. The schooner Three Brothers was lying at Waugawehi when the Star of the South left there yesterday. We learn that the steamers Wellington and Nevada, hence at 12.45 p.m. on the 18th inst., for Auckland, were sighted fiom tiie Star of the feouih off Tologa Bay at 9 30 the same night—the Yankee bo st being very slightly in advance. These two steamers would appear {o be pretty evenly matched in a trial of speed The s.s Lord Ashley left Wellington for this port at 12.5 p.m. to-d.iy.
