The correspondent of the New Zealand Herald writes as follows under date May 17 :- This morning very great excitement was caused in the mining community by the rumour current that a very rich find had taken place during the night in the Caledonian mines. On proceeding to the company's office, I found such to be the case upwards of 25 cwt. of about the richest specimens ever broken out. being >afely lodged in the strong boxes. These were taken from the slopes of main lode, between the mid and low level, ou the old run of gold, but up the hill more than to the Golden Crown boundary. In addition to this lot, there is another heavy parcel in hand, which neceesitates the manager starting the two stamper battery tomorrow, which by the end of the fortnight should show up a splendid yield. The old adage of " coining events cast their shadows before," is here exemplified, as 1 do not remember the specimen crushing starting so early before. The correspondent of the Daily Southern Cross telegraphed the following under date May 17, 9.20 p.m.:--The Caledonian lodged 1,038 ozs. of gold to day, making a total of 2,038 ozß. Two tons of specimens have been taken out since last night. The general stuff i« very rich. A. great rise in the price of Caledonian scrip has taken place. £125 per .share has been offered and refused. Nine tons of good stone for ihe Rover Claim ha\e yielded 9 ozs of gold. A crushing of specimens from the Little and Good gave a return of 20| ounces. Scrip in the Nonpareil was sold todav at<£4 ; Central Italy, 25s ; Golden Calf, 22s Gd; Thames £25 ; . Tookey, Ml 5,
