Tuesday, May 16. An extensive fire occurred on Sunday morning last in Pitt-street, at the top of Hobson and Grey-streets. Ten dwelling-houses were totally destroyed. The estimated loss is oter £4OOO. The New Zealand Insurance Company's loss is £1800; .Royal, £1300; and Impe rial, £2OO. Te Hira has placed the matter of the Tauranga mail service in the bands of Mr Mackay—to open or shut as he pleases; also, the opening up of the Ohinemuii country. Heavy floods occurred at the Thames on the 12 th inst, The creeks rose con siderably, flooding the lower parts of the township. The Central Italy Company's ground has been jumped in consequence of an informality in the lease. Great indignation is expressed at the conduct of the jumpers. Messrs. Copeland, Anderson* and Casey were yesterday elected members for the new Harbor Board. The Caledonian Company pays another dividend of £lO per share to-day. The Thames Company will pay a divi dend oi 30s to morrow. A woov.in named Eliza Knox threw herself into the river from the wharf yesterday, and was drowned. The ship Caduceus sails for London on Saturday next, with upwards of fifty passengers and 15,000 ozs. gold and a large cargo. Arrived—May 12th, Queen, from Lyttelton ; May 14th, Onehnnga, from (Jamaru, after a protracted passage of twenty-eight days ; May 15tb, H.M.S. Virago, from Wellington, and s.s. Star of the South from Napier.
