Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1871.

Last night, in the Provincial Council, the Clive Square Bill underwent,an extended discussion, in which a number of the members took part. It remilted in the committal of the Bill, but through the efforts, of Mr Colenso. who was desirous that a fin ther expression of public opinion might be made on the question, the consideration of the Bill in committee was postponed to Tuesday next. We have a full report of the discussion --vhich, however, we are re luctantly compelled to hold over till to-morrow. We counsel a'l who value the free use of the property in question to show in an unmistakable manner their determination to maintain the present free and unenclosed position of the land, and defeat the efforts of the party interested, who, we are informed, have expressed a resolve to obtain the contiol of it. As a matter of fact we believe that the Council in dealing with the subject is exceeding its powers, that it has no right nor ability to deal in the way proposed with the public domain, but this is but a small matter with our local council, very many of its acts being in precisely the same position. We feel that the thanks of the com-, munitv are due to those members who last night ga\ e the proposal so uncompromising and vigorous an opposition.
