Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. FRIDAY, MAY 12, 1871.

With reference to the forthcoming rifle match between twelve of the N&pier Rifle Volunteers and an equal number of No. 6 Company Auckland liirles, \ve may state that the local team will probably be constituted as follows : —Ensign Close, Color-sergeant Fielder, Seigeants Blaße and Chicken, Corporals M'llroy, Sellars, Renouf, and Tier, and Volunteers Stubbs, Nasmyth, Moore, and Boyd. The match will, we learn, take place on the 24th inst. Last night, about 8 o'clock, a man named James Ross was crossing over from the steamer Luna to the schooner Hero, when from some cau«e he accidentally missed his footing and fell overboard. The night was intensely dark, and Ross being unable to swim, the probability is that he would have been drowned had not the splash been heard, and the pilot boat's crew being at hand, he was quickly rescued from his perilous position. He had apparently swallowed a large quantity of water during his immersion.

At the close of the inspection parade in Napier the other day, Colonel Harrington mentioned a fact which intending competitors at the next Colonial .prize Firing would do well to bear in mind. He stated that it was the intention of the Government, when issuing the prize-tiring regulations for next year, to insert a clause to the effect that no person could be a representative unless he had attended a certain number of parades during the twelve months. He mentioned tliis now, so that no one could say that timely warning had not been given,.
