Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1871.

Napier Musical Society.— Performing members are requested to at tend a full rehearsal in the Oddfellows' Hall this evening, commencing at halfpast 7 punctually.

Last Night's Performance.—The Garrick Club, in conjunction with the Artillery Dramatic Club, produced last night, in the Odd Fellows' Hall, Tom Taylor's drama of " The Ticket of Leave Man." The hall was well filled, and the performance a success. The principal part, that of Robert Brierly, was ably sustained by Mr Swan, and that of Hawkshaw the detective by Mr Kemp. Mr H. C. Wilson took the part of Meller the Jew, and acted it admirably. Mr Thompson, also, was very good as James Dalton. Mr Brathwaite was well got up as an old woman, and performed his part very creditably ; and the only fault to be found with Sam, the " young gent," was that he did not seem quite so youthful as he should have been. The success of the piece was greatly enhanced by the admirable scenery, painted expressly for i this piece by Mr Kemp. The " Belle Yue Tea Gardens,'' the " Street in London," and the final scene, " St. Nicholas' Churchyard," were specially good. At the end of the piece it was notified that it should be repeated at an early date. The performance concluded, with a farce entitled " Which shall I marry 1 "

Civil Service Examinations.—"We have received from the Hon. the Colonial Secretary a copy of amended regulations for examination of candidates under the Civil Service Act, 1866, under which it appears the youths not seeking employment under Government may be examined and obtain certificates of efficiency from the Board on payment of a nominal fee. It is presumed that such certificates will prove of value to youths seeking employment in banks, met chants' offices and elsewhere, and that theamendedjregulations in this respect will be satisfactorly regarded by the friends of education throughout'the Colony.
