Colonel Harrington, we believe, may be expected to arrive here on the return of the Lord Ashley from Auckland, when the annual inspection of the Militia and Volunteers will take place. A Rifle Volunteer Parade took place this morning in Olive Square, but the attendanee was small. The men were exercised in marching past in slow time, and in skirmishing drill.
Mapieb Musical Society.—Ti will be seen by advertisement that the concert of the above Society is fixed for Friday evening next, sth instant. We learn that the timber for the Rifle Volunteer drill-shed may be expected to arrive here shortly by the schooner Saucy Lass from Auckland. Fine Weather has fairly set in. The telegraphic report for the last week has been every day, " Calm.; blue sky ; sea calm."
The schooner Onward, now arrived from Manukau, has on board, we believe, the timber for the new Roman Catholic Church.
We would draw attention tsfen advertisement in another column of a performance in the Oddfellows' Hall to night by Mr and Mrs Frank Towers, Miss Rosa Towers, and Mr J. Jewell, This company have been very highly spoken of by the press elsewhere, aud will no doubt be well supported in Napier.
Resident Magistrate's Court. — No cases this morning. Two transfers of licences were applied for and granted as follows :—The licence of the Provincial Hotel, West Clive, wa* transferred from Mr W. Caldwell to Mr R. Jeffaies, and the licence of the Clive Hotel from Mr R. Jeffares to Mr Peter Miller.
The New Premises for the Union Bank of Australia, at Ihe corner of Hastings-street and Emerson-street, are being rapidly proceeded with, and the framework in course of erection is already a prominent object. The strongroom, which is being built by. Mr. Steevens, of Napier, is stronger, we believe, than any other in the Colony, and the whole building seems to be of a very substantial character, and no doubt, when finished, will present an imposing appearance.
"Colonial Questions" —We have to acknowledge the receipt by the mail of a pamphlet entitled " Colonial Questions pressing for immediate solution, in the interest of the Nation and the Empire," by R. A. Macfie, M.P., member of the Ptoyal Colonial Institute. (London, Longnans.) The pamphlet (which contains a collection of letters and papers written at various time*) will have our early attention.
