THE GARB OF OLD GAUL.
"We mentioned a day or two ago that efforts were being made in Wellington to popularise the volunteer movement by raising a corps wearing the romantic Highland costume. The Independent heartily commends the idea, and goes on to say that "it will be a constant source of pride and gratification to •Scotia's sons who.have made this place their home, in reminding them of their loved land, and of the many associations inseparably linked with the tartan; it will at the same time arouse a deep interest in a large section of the community in at least one corps of our volunteers, while the genial spirit of rivalry sure to spring up between the kilted and breeched riflemen will react upon the whole body v.ith that invigorating effect which is just now being awakened, and which we are all so anxious to see developed to the utmost; and what is more we think it will. If Scotchmen are and have been noted for one quality more than another, it is for their earnestness. Though taciturn as a I'ace, no people are so genial—when the occasion warrants it—or enjoy their national pastimes or periodical relax ation with more unealculating heartiness. We all know how much we are indebted to them for their efforts in making the Caledonian Gathering an institution with us, and one that is looked forward to as an annual treat by many. -The same spirit that willed the Caledonian .Society into existence can also bring a Highland Brigade into being that will be a pride and ornament to our volunteer corps in this city. We hope soon to be able to give them a Highland welcome.
