Thursday, April 13. By the census returns the population of Otago is shown to be 61,000 —an increase of 12,300 since last census. The congregation of the First Church have resolved to erect a monument to Dr. Burns at a cost of £SOO. Scarlatina is increasing. In the Wai kouaiti district eight deaths occurred last week. The municipalities of Balclutha and Milton have petitioned the Government to go on with the Clutha railway both ends simultaneously. The new Ministry is constituted as follows : —Cargill is appointed Provincial Secretary and Secretary for Public Works; Turnbull, Provincial Treasurer; Haughton, Gold' Fields' Secretary ; McArthur, without office.
