Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1871.
The weather continues very unsettled, and,a considerable quantity of rain has fallen since Thursday evening. The wind still holds from the southward, with heavy swell in the Bay. The supplementary mail for Europe, &c, despatched pet Star of the South on Tuesday last, will not reach Auckland in time for the outward steamer, —the Star having been seen passing Wangawehi yesterday afternoon, the very day on which the mail-boat is sup posed to leave Auckland for Honolulu.
We regret; to record a painful accident which occurred on board the s.s. Napier on Sunday night last off the East Cape. It appears that a fireman named Richard Eastcott was engaged in some work in the engine room on the night in question, when a sudden lurch of the vessel caused his trousers to get entangled with some portion of the machinery, and his leg being drawn in was broken in two places. Luckily, the engineer heard Easteott's cries for help, and the engines were stopped almost immediately; had it been otherwise, the accident would, beyond a doubt, have resulted fatally. On the steamer's arrival at Poverty Bay, the wounded limb was set, and shortly after the Napier came into the harbor this morning Eastcott was conveyed to the Pro\ incial EJospital.
