Thursday, March 23. Arrivep—Luua, p.s., with the Southern Voluuteers, A rifle match, between a team of ten picked men from all South, against ten of the Thames Rifle Association, came off to-day, resulting in a victory for the South. A large number of people were present, including the Defence Minister and the Superintendent. The ranges were 400, 500, and 600 yards ; five shots at each range. The result for the South was as follows :-rTaylor. (Otago) 44 ; Douglass, 44 ; Wales, 43 ; Adams, 42 ; Christie, 41 ; Grey, (Wellington) 35 ; GoUlie, (Otago) 33 :; Wilson, 32 ; Chamberlain, (Westland) 30 ; Greer, (Wellington) 27. Total, 371. For the Thames :—Pearson, 39 ; Hazard, 38 ; Hopkins. 36 ; Constable, 34 ; Gratify 33 ; Stewart, 33 ; Hoskins, 32 j Gilpin,' 28 ; Small, 23 ; Curnie, 19. Total 315. The day was beautifully fine, and much iuterest was displayed in the match. A match for Cadets, of prizes of £3 and £2, also took place ; the range was 400 yards, with five shots. The following was the result : porrie (Christchurch), champion, 17 ; Bennett (Thames). 16; Harnett (Thames), 15; Paxham, 14; Chuck, 14; Wood, 13; Taine, 13; Keid, 8. There was only oue miss out of the forty shots. The Southern representatives, including' the Cadets, have been entertained at dinner. Major Cooper, President of the Thames Rifle Association, presided. Amongst those present were His Honor the Superintendent, the Hon. D. M'Lean, Native and Defence Minister, and Colonel Harrington. About 100, including the Southern Volunteers, sat down, and everything passed off very successfully. The ship Caduceus, Roberts, has arrived at Auckland from London, 90 days out. She brings 102 passengers, also a quantity of birds and hares for the Acclimatisation Society. Arrived—Star of the South, from Napier. In the share market, the closing rates v ere n< follows :—Caledonians, £BS ; All Nations, £5 to *6; Tokotea's, 12s; Whau'B, £2; Tookey's, kl; AlburniaV, £2 Bs. At the Police Court Gee, a special constable at the North Shore, was fined 40s. and £ls costs for killing a dog.
