The Co'inty Council of Westland (says the Evening Post) seems to have learned wisdom earlier than some of its neighbors, and to be anxious to promote the bona fide settlement of people within the country. It has accordingly passed two important resolutions to the effect that 17,000 acres, 12 miles from Hokitika, should be laid open for sale at ten shillings per acre, and 50,000 acres at the Haast River, at the same price, on small yearly payments. A recent English visitor to the United States, who had strong Northern sympathies during the civil war, declares that there is such bitter hostility between the Nor'h and South that if a conflict was to occur between the United Slates and England there would be a fresh rebellion in the States. The Evening Post lelegraphic correspondent in Dunedin writes under date, March 24 :—The Governor has just started overland for Canterbury. It was announced the "Volunteers would form a guard of honor, and the Artillery fire a salute; but not enough Volunteers turned out. The Artillery could not make the gun off, and retired chapfallen Bell has told various parties here that he will accept the Speakership ; h« is endeavoring to induce M.Hit's here to support the appointment of John Hall for the vacant Ministerial seat.
