The hearing of the celebrated Telegraph libel case at Dunedin has been again postponed for a week, in consequence of a death having occurred in the family of Mr Macassey, the counsel for the Crown. An Auckland paper of the 18th ins L . says it is worthy of note that the Caledonian Company have paid in dividends in weeks to the sum of £IOO,OOO, and earned forward about i:8,000 to their credit, after meeting all current expenses. The far-famed Tookey's claim, m which so many Australian invdte.l, has,it skeins, stopped work. A late Thames paper says :—We regret to announce that the working of this mine, notwithstanding its encouraging prospect? and splendid position, was stopped on Saturday, The tires were let down and the pumps ceased working. It is not known how long it will remain idle, but we understand that it will depend upon arrangements with the Caledonian and Golden Orown
Companies in a great measure. The Tookey claim being the lew est on tlie reef has naturally the largest amount of drainage and the grentest proportion of water to lift to the surface. Negotiations have, we understand, been going on for some time past with reference to this drainage; question, without, however, leading to am very satisfactory result. The consequence that Mr Do war, the company's manager, re ceivtd instructions to stop the pumps on Saturday evening. We perceive that a call of 9s per share has been made on the unpaid capital of the company. This call will cover the whole of the unpaid capital, as that is all that at present remains on tlie shares, so that it is quite probable before long the company will be remodelled.
