James Naughton, late Commissioner of Police, died suddenly to-day. Reports fiom the Thames gold-fields are encouraging. The week's dividend declared for the Caledonian claim has been £l2 ; the Thames, £2 —Shares in the principal claims are rising
The latest news from Waikato is. that Hamiara, a young chief of Rewi's tribe, has proposed that Tapihana, who, is now prowling about the Pirongia ranges, shall be shot.
It is believed that a large poition of the outward New Zealand mails has been burnt ill the late Hudson Railway accident.
The St. Kilda has arrived from Wanganui, and the Jeannie Duncan from
Fiji

The prize firing, North Island against the South Island, was won by the former by one point, amid great excitement. Morrow, of Auckland, who scored 50 points, has taken the first prize; and Christie, of Otago, has taken the becond. The presentation of the prizes will take place to-morrow. The five highest scorers are to compete at 1,000 yards with the MartiniHenri rifle.
