CHRISTCHURCH.
Monday, March 6. The quarterly sittings of the Supreme Court in its criminal jurisdiction, com menced this morning. The calendar is remarkable for the very large number of serious cases, including four murders, and several other charges of a grave character.
George Gustave Schmidt, for stabbing, has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labor. Frederick Stanley, for obtaining money under false pretences, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard laborMark Turner, bestiality, five years penal servitude.
March 7. John James Smith, charged with larceny, was found guilty and sentenced to 18 month's imprisonment Walter Johnston, a hardened criminal, charged with burglary, was found guilty, and sentenced to three years' penal servitude. James Williams and G. Cooper, charged with burglary, were acquitted. John James Keefe, for horse stealing, was sentenced to three years' penal servitude, March 8. Simon Cedeno, charged with wilful murder, was found guilty, and sen tenced to death. The Judge held out no hopes of commutation of sentence. March 9. Richard Ray, charged with larceny from the person, was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. John De Leon, charged with indecent assault, was found guilty, and sentenced to 4 years penal servitude. Joseph Crockatt, charged with obtaining goods by false pretences, was acquitted. A police sergeant at Leitbfield, named Beattie, has been committed for trial for embezzlement. Mr Cracroft Wil.son has been elected to the Provincial Council for the Heathcote district.
