PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS. TOWN OF NAPIER. According to notice the result of the poll was declared at noon to-day at the Resident Magistrate's Court-house. G-. A. Oliver, Esq., the Returning officer for the Clive and Napier Country Districts, acted in the absence of Mr Rochfort, and having read his authority, declared the state of the poll as it has already been published in our columns. He then declared Messrs. Colenso, Sutton, Tiffen, Lee, and Kennedy duly elected. Mr Sutton thanked the electors for the honor they had done him. He had not expected to be placed so high in the list. It was not necessary for him to state anything fresh, his opinions were already so well known. He believed that increased taxation was in view, and that no change of institutions could avert it. He thought Town Boards or County Councils were not required here; we were getting on very well without them. If the country people would tax themselves for public works, the town would not remain behind; but it would be the duty of town members to see that the town was not taxed more than the country.
Mi- Tjffen thanked the electors tor the confidence they had placed in him. He could conscientiously say he had not asked for a single vote. The Town was his home: all his interests lay in it, and he would support its claims whenever he could do so with fairness to the country. He believed the whole live town representatives would pull well together for the interests ot their constituents.
Mr Lee thanked the electors for the position in which they they had placed him—new man as lie was. He had nothing to add to his former statement; his motto was " Deeds, not words," and his future conduct "would speak for itself. Mr Kennedy thanked the electors for the honor they had, for the third time, conferred upon him. Pie had seen a meeting advertised for to-night, at which it was hinted that the new members would be present. He saw no necessity for this; he was not fond of talking himself, and he meant no disrespect to his constituents when he said he did not intend to be present. He again thanked the electors. Mr Sutton proposed, and Mr Kennedy seconded a vote of thanks to Mr ftochfort, the Returning officer, which was acknowledged on Mr Rochfort's behalf by Mr Oliver.
NAPIER COUNTRY DISTRICT. The polling for this district, ,so far as Meanee is concerned, has resulted in favor of Messrs Maney and Wood. The returns from Puketapu, however, have yet to arrive, and they may affect the result.
HAMPDEN. The nomination of candidates for this district took place on Friday last, when Major Carlyon and Mr Bridge were proposed and seconded, A poll was demanded, which will take place on Tuesday, 14th March.
