Thursday, Feb 23. All the Superintendancy returns are now in. Macandrew is, 3,270 i; Beid, 2,058; majority in fayor of Mr Macandiew, 212. Scarlet fever* imported by passengers, per Robert Henderson, has. broken out at Invercargill, Switzers, and Beaumont.
The case Regina v. Barton has been on before Mr Strode. Mr Macassey, objected to the case going on. pending argument in the Supreme Court, but the Magistrate declined to stop the proceedings. Some 40 witnesses are to be examined. The examination to day has been confined to. Campbell, the manager, and Murison, the present editor, and a few unimportant witnesses.
.The crew of the Banshee, when, she struck, took to the boat, which capsized. The master and one of the seamen clung to it, until the latter sank, exhausted. The master, after being in the water 17 hours, was cast ashore at Tuuiai. The steanier Wallace visited the wreck yesterday. It was fast bieaking up. Therewere no signs of the ruen, who had. doubtless perished. The Otago University opens, in June. Dr. Black has been, appointed to the profes'-'or.ship of rational science from. 23> candidates.
