The schooner Ocean Wave leaves for the Chatham Islands on Saturday next, having been detained by the Government until that day, The following passengers proceed by her:—Captain and Mrs Thomas and 2 children, Mr Ritchie, and Mr Danvers. We learn by a private telegram lhat the a.s. Star of the South, hence at 7 p.m. on Friday last, arrived at the Thames, all well, early on the morning of Monday List, and was to have left for Auckland the same night. The rifle match yesterday between eight of the Rifle Yolunteer "cracks" against a dozen others of the same company resulted in a victory for the former with 10 points to spare. The ranges were 400, 500, and 600 yaids, 5 shots at each range. On the winning side, Mr Stubbs stood ac the top with a respectable score of 41, and Mr Sellars occupied the same position on the losing side, having scored 31 points. The s.s. ISTapier, Captain W. Bendall, left Napier on Saturday last, at 6 p.m. Experienced strong head winds, and arrived at Wangawehi at 5 a.m. on Sunday. Landed passengers, and left for Turanganui, arriving there at 9 a.m. the same day. On Monday, landed and shipped cargo, and left at noon for Napier via Wangawehi and Mania, arriving here at 1.30 this morning. The Napier leaves for Poverty again on Friday.

Hawke's Bay Races.— The first day's sport came off yesterday, aDd was very successful. Mr Maddock officiated as judge. The Jockey Club Cup (Handicap) of £IOO was won by Orlando, Akeake second, and Nebula third. A match for .£25 between Pai Marire and Gazelle was won by the former. In the third event, the Railway Stakes of .£3O, both heats were won by Slander, Earl Grosvenor second. The Hack Race of £lO was won by Mi Britten's Despatch, Pai Marire second. The Ladies' Purse of £4O was won by Yatterina, Orlando second, and Earl Grosvenor third.
