Friday, Feb. 2. At a monster meeting of the Working Men's Protection Society, it was decided that a criminal information for libel should be laid against the editor of the Evening Star newspaper. The nomination for City West took place to-day: The show of hands resulted as follows :—Gillies, 116; Williamson, 76 ; Dignan, .42. A poll was demanded by the last candidate. Capt. Ashby and the Insurance Companies offer a reward of ,£3O to any persons giving such information as shall lead to the discovery of the persons who set fire to the ship City of Auckland. The barque Bella Mary has arrived from Hobart Town,
A dividend of £2 has been declared in the Caledonia Claim. The Thames Gold-mining Company has declared a dividend of 7s 6d.
News from Waikato reports everything quiet.
