Tuesday, Jan. 31. For Olutha, the final result is—Thomp son, 155; Macandrew, 53, Richardson, 30. Mr Reid is opposed for Taieri by Mr Tolmie, the Deputy Superintendent. A keen contest is anticipated. Another fatal case of scarlatina occurred yesterday. The victim was the child of the keeper of the quarantine. TARANAKI. Monday, January 30. The election for the Town of New Plymouth resulted as follows :—Kelly 105; Whitcombe, 39. AUCKLAND. Monday, January 30. The regatta was a great success. The prize given by Creville’s Telegram Co. was disputed. Tt is now known that the incendiaries are a regularly-organised gang. They have sent threatening letters to Lady Bowen, the Superintendent and his wife, and also to the Southern Cross. Mr Branigan has been adopting precautionary measures. The force in the Waikato has been reinforced by 250 men.
