The Puchess of Montpensier, it is stated, is at present seriously ill, The competition hetween the 9-inch Armstrong wrought-iron muzzle-loader and the Krupp steel 9-inch breech-loader-rifle guns during some months past at Vienna has yielded the victory to the steel gun. The Austrian military newspaper, the Comrade, says that " the news given by the Taablatt that the Armstrong 9-inch gun burst at the 121st round oi; the firing on the Steinfeld must be recti-, fied. The gun is not burst, but severely damaged." To this we can add the following, confirming the previous results in favor of steel in the competitive trials at Berlin in 1868. In the recent Austrian trials both guns were fired with prismatic powder, and after HI rounds the Arm*, strong gun showed a split 26 inches in length, and was consequently declared unfit for further service. The 9-inch steel gun has coutinued firing, and scores at this time 210 rounds, remaining in, good condition ; the breech-loading apparatus being also in a perfect state, gf conservation,
