Attempted Suicide.—About two o'clock this morning, Mrs Drummond, who keeps a boarding house on the Spit, was observed by the night-watch-man to run into the surf. He at once ran to the house and called the lodgers, all of whom at once got up and came co render such assistance as they could. By the time they reached the surf she had drifted about a hundred yards along the beach, and was a considerable distance from the shore. One of the lodgers who could swim went into the surt, and with some difficulty brought her to land. When brought to shore life was apparently extinct, but by the use of the proper means, animation was at length restored. Dr Spencer, who was sent for, was soon in attendance and administered the usual remedies. She v\as taken to the hospital, where we hear she is doing as well as can be expected. She could not have been in the water less than a quarter of anhour, and when found her face was beneath the surface. She had been seen walking backwards and forwards on the beach for some time previous, and is supposed to have been suffering from some hallucination.

Resident Magistrate's Court. — Yesterday afternoon William Ross was brought up on the information of John Wood, bootmaker, charged with forging and uttering a cheque drawn in the name of Messrs Lodder and Palmer, for .£5 9s. Defendant pleaded not guilty, admitting that he had uttered the cheque, but denying that he had forged it, or knew it to be foged. Mr Win. Lodder, part owner of the Star of the South, proved that the defendant had for some time been employed by him as cook, but had been paid in full when he received his discharge. The signature to the cheque was a forgery.—John Wood, shoemaker, deposed that on Friday afternoon defendant purchased articles in his shop to the value ofiU, tendering the cheque in question in payment, and receiving the articles and Mi 8s 6d in money in exchange. The cheque

was cashed the same day by Newton, Irvine and Uo. } who afterwards returned it, on the ground that it was forged. On presenting the cheque at the Bank of New Zealand on Saturday, he was informed that i» was a forgery, and accordingly put tlie matter into the hands of the police. Prisoner, on giving him the cheque, represented that he had received it on account of wages.—Case adjourned. This morning Ross was brought up again, when Mrs John Wood, and Mr James M. Wood, the teller of the New Zealand Bank, were examined. The evidence of the latter witness was to the effect that just before the cheque was presented Mr Lpdder had warned him that a forged cheque with the signature of the firm was afloat, and cautioned him against paying it, in consequence of which he stopped it as soon it was presented.— By the desire of the prisoner a letter which he had addressed to the firm on the 25th inst. was handed in. In this letter he offered to contract for furnishing them certain supplies,—He said it was not likely he would have written such a letter if he had just been forging

a cheque in the name of the firm. After being duly cautioned he declined to make any further statement. —The case was then adjourned to 4 p.m. to-day. John McLeod was again brought up, in order that further evidence might be taken in his case. Philip H. Russell deposed that the cheque produced, signed " Canning & Russell," had not been signed by himself or partner, nor any one authorised by them—was, in fact, a forgery. He kept an account with the Bank of New Zealand, but never with the Union Bank, on which the cheque was drawn.—The prisoner, having been cautioned, said that he had got the cheque from a man named William Thompson, in Napier, some time this month.—Adjourned to 4 p.m. A number of civil cases were co come on this afternoon.
