AUCKLAND.
Tuesday, Jan. 24. The ship City of Auckland was this mornipg discovered to be on fire for ward, in the 'tween decks, where 300* tons of tow and flax had been stowec} the previous day. Efforts to extinguish the fire being unavailing, she was scuttled in rnid harbor, and now lies in water to her deck—the cargo being under water. The vessel is much injured. The nomination for Waitemata took place to day, when Messrs Henderson and Freer were nominated. The show of hands was in favor of the latter, and a poll as demanded.
Wednesday, Jan. 25.
The Colonial Government steamer Luna has returned from the East Coast. The Hon, Mr M'Lean, Defence Minister, is a passenger. A quarrel took place between two hapus of the Arawa tribe, but it has since been settled.
Tamai Kowhai opens the country to Europeans. He will permit the Government to pursue their enemies. An ineffectual attempt was made yesterday to raise the (Jity of Auckland.
"Fiji advices report the total wreck of the Dashing Wave at Wake Island. The crew escaped to the Caroline Group, and were rescued by the schooner Oriti.
The ship Timaru has left for London with a cargo valued at <£31,000. The barque Santiago has left for Napier.

Friday, Jan. 24. Mr Fox was returned to-day for ftangitikei without opposition.
NELSON.
Thursday, Jan. 26. The nomination of candidates for the city took place yesteiday, when Messrs Curtis, Sheppard, C. J. Richmond, Lightband, and M'Gregor were proposed. The last withdrew. The show of hands was in favor of Messrs Curtis and Lightband. The meeting lasted three-and-a-half hours, but the attendance was reduced to a small number before the close,
Mr Lightband was not present, having been brought forward without his knowledge.
Mr Sheppard read telegrams which had passed between Mr Luckie and Dr. Featherston concerning a rumor of a statement by a letter in Nelson, that he (Dr. F.) had obtained for Government an offer of £450,000 at 3| per cent., which Government did not accept because the Bank would have got no commission. Doctor Featherston, while admitting this, so far as the offer of the money and its refusal were concerned, denied that this was from any consideration for the Bank, but because the Government did not want the money.
DUNEDIN.
Thursday, Jan. 26, The funeral of the late Dr Bums took place to-day, and was attended by 1,000 persons. The day was observed as a close holiday. It is reported that an attempt will be made to upset Mr M'Lean's election, on the ground of bribery. Friday, Jan. 27.

Olive District Election.—-The nomination of a member for the Olive district in the General Assembly took place yesterday at Waipawa. The late representative, Mr J. D. Ormond, was proposed by Mr A'Deane, and seconded by Colonel Lambert, and, there being no opposition, was declared to be duly elected. Mr Ormond addressed the electors at considerable length.
The Eifle Volunteer Band will give their next open-air concert (weather permitting) in the Government lawn, to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon, at half-past five o'clock. The following is the programme: — Quick March.. "Rosalie" . . . Chattaway. Selection . " Rigoletto" . . Verdi. Quadrille . "England" . . . D'Albert. Waltz . . . "Maud" . . . Laurent. March . . .
