The usual weekly parade of the Napier Rifle Volunteers took place on the parade ground, Olive Square, yesterday afternoon. The attendance was not good. Those present, after being inspected, &c, were employed in judging distances.—After parade, a meeting of those having shares in the Drill-room Company was held .in the Masonic Hall, and term mated satisfactorily.
This morning, as a horse to belonging Mr P. Palmer was on the Spit with a cart, it suddenly took fright and began kicking against the bottom of the cart, and continued until one of its hind legs was shattered so badly that it had to be shot. Port Ahuriri Post and Telegraph Of* ice —We are glad to note that the Government have relieved the officer in charge of this important station of a portion of his duties by the appointment of a skillei assistant, who has now been installed somewhat over a week. We can bear testimony to the indefatigable and obliging manner in which Mr Calders has performed his duties while he has been in charge of the office ; but it has for a long time been evident that they had become too heavy for a single officer to attend to.
We learn from our contemporary of this morning that a meeting was held yesterday afternoon at the Ferry Hotel, Western Spit, to consider the subject of the erection of a bridge from the Eastern to the Western Spit. The meeting was attended by a number of merchants of this town, and gentlemen residing on the other side of the harbor. Mr Kinross was voted to the chair. Various suggestions were made, one (from the Provincial Engineer) being that a wire tramway should be erected, and another that a permanent pile bridge should be built—estimated cost, £6000; estimated returns from traffic, £SOO per annum. The meeting unanimously adopted the latter suggestion, and passed a resolution that a bridge from one Spit to the other by way of Maori Island was urgently required. A committee of the following gentlemen was appointed to carry out the object of the meeting : Messrs. Kinross, Parsons, Routledge, T. "Richardson, G. Condie, and Joseph Torr.
