Saturday, Jan. 21. Private letters by the mail received in Auckland state that Bishop Viard, of Wellington, while travelling on ihe European Continent, was taken a prisoner by the Prussians as a spy. At the time of the departure of the mail he was still in prison. The Golden Crown claim, Thames, has declared a dividend of ,£lO per share. The native meeting at Te Kuiti is still proceeding. Tapihana and Whitiora are present. Eewi has said that if the Waikatos desire fighting ihey should attack Poihipi, ofTaupo. The unemployed are distributing pc-. tition, j for relief. They are sending a petition to the Victoria Government, and also a statement concerning the state of the labor market in this Colony to the London Times, and to the Scotsman and the Irishman. Sailed—Kate, for Sydney. Jan. 23. Mi-Reader Wood lias defeated Mr T. M. King for Parnell. Mr O'liorke has been elected for Onehunga without opposition. Messrs. W. T. Buckland and A. Clarke have been elected for Franklin.
