Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1871.

Resident Magistrate's Court. — Yesterday afternoon, before H. B. Sealy, Esq., J.P, and 8. G. Brandon, Esq, J.P., Daniel M'Leod was charged with obtaining money and goods by false pretences at Tarawera by means of a valueless cheque for £l2 on the Bank of New Zealand. The case being proved, the prisoner said he was too drunk at the time to know what he was doing. —Committed for trial at the next sittings of the District Court at Napier. John M'Leod was charged with forging and uttering a cheque for ,£l3, with intent to defraud one James Ashton. Theprosecutor deposed that last Sunday, in payment for refreshments prisoner gave him a cheque for ,£l3 on the Union Bank of Australia, signed " Canning and Russell," which he received, giving the prisoner the change. His suspicions were afterwards aroused by the prisoner requesting him not to present the cheque for a day or two. He then requested the prisoner to return the money and take back the cheque, which he refused to do, and he also refused to endorse it. On the cheque being presented at the Union Bank it was found that Canning and Russell had no account there, and the Bank of New Zealand immediately pronounced it a forgery.—The case was then remanded to the 31st instant for furthor evidence. General Assembly Elections.— District. —The nomination for the above district will take place at "\Yaipawa at noon to-morrow, and the poll (if necessary) will be taken on the l\\d itybruary.

After parade, there will be a meeting, in the Masonic Hall, of those members who have taken shares in ihe Drill-room Company.— "We are glad to learn that the Cadet Company recently formed in connection with the llifles are improving rapidly, and will, no doubt, present quite a soldierly appearance when Colonel. Harrington pays his annual official visit to Rawke's Bay.
