Thursday, Jan. 19. The libel case against the editor of the Daily Times stands adjourned for a week. The proprietors repudiate responsibility for the articles complained of. A man named M'lvor has drowned himself in the Molyneux. The jury returned a verdict of "temporary insanity." Mr Reid is a candidate for the representation of Taieri in the General Assembly. At the nomination for Waikouati, Messrs. Hutchinson and M'Lean were proposed. The poll will take place on Wednesday. The nomination for Tnvercargill took place to-day, when Messrs. Calder Lumsden, and M'Clure v,ere proposed. Mr M'Clure withdrew, stating that his views vveie substantially those held by Mr Lumsden. Mr Lumsden said he was in favor of the Government scheme as pioposed. On a show of hands being called, there were —for Calder, 22 ; for Lumsden, 14; whereupon a poll was demanded. It will take place on Tue 3 day next, when a close contest is ex pected, Mr Denison is up for Mataura. He addressed a meeting of the electors last evening, and expi'essed himself as opposed to the Government scheme. A motion in his favor was carried against an amendment that an opinion could not be expressed until after Mr Dillon Bell was heard. Considerable interest is being taken in election matters.
