Road through Seventy-mile Bush. Tenders for the construction of certain works in the Seventy-mile Bush will be received at the General Government Agent's Office, Napier, up to noon tomorrow. Criminal Action, —From a Dunediu telegram (received last night too late for publication) we perceive that the Government have commenced a criminal action against the Otago Daily Times, We presume the action is one of libel, arising out of the charge made bv that paper against the Government in the matter of the Press Association telegrams. Napier Artillery Volunteers.— Yesterday afternoon an inspection parade of the above corps took place for the purpose of gaining certificates* of efficiency. The company mustered on Clive Square at 4 Ad p.m., under Lieutenants lioutledge and Swan. and. were marched to the Barracks, where the men were inspected by Major Withers. We hear that about 23 passed. The band of the eompany was also in attendance. We understand that at a meeting of the company held last evening Lieut. Routlednre was elected to the post of Captain. General Assembly Elections.— Nap;er District —The nomination of candidates for the Napier district in the House of Representatives took place today at noon at the Resident Magistrate's Court-house. Twenty or thirty electors were present. Mr Rochfort's commission as Returning Officer having been read, that gentleman read the writ for the election. Alexander Kennedy, Esq, proposed Donald McLean, Esq , as a fit and proper person to repiesent the district. It was not necessary, he remarked, to say much on the behalf of the gentleman he proposed ; his career was so well known to all present; and few would dispute that he had for a long period served his constituents faithfully and well. This was not the place to refer to the general policy of the Government of which Mr McLean was a member, but in his ministerial capacity he had done his best for the Colon}. He would have been here co day to speak for himself, but that he was prevented by his duties elsewhere.—Mr J. LeQuesne seconded the nomination. He used at one time to complain of Mr McLean, but had since found that he had had no reason to complain.—Mo other candidate being proposed, Mr McLean was declared duly elected, the Returning Officer remarking that he should always like to see elections conducted in a similar quiet- manner.— A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer having been passed on the motion of Mr Kennedy, the meeting broke up,
