Bendall, returned to port this forenoon, having on board 21 bales of wpol from Mangakuri. The Napier left this port at midnight on Friday last, and arrived off Mangakuri at 5 o'clock the next morning. Commenced landed and shipping pargo with some difficulty, owing to the heavy swell on. At 3 p.m., as the boat with the last pf the cargo on board—viz., a case of biscuits and a few pieces of timber —was entering the river, it capsized, and the men had a narrow escape from drowning. The boat was in such a position that no assistance could be rendered from the steamer. Fortunately, however, Colonel Russell and Captain Russell were on |ae beach at the time of the accident, and they immediately rushed into the surf, and, with the assistance of a party of natives, comprised pf both men and women, succeeded in getting the boat on to the beach, and thus rescuing the crew, who had been in the W3ter about 20 minutes, from a watery grave. The natives, we learn, were exceedingly kind to the crew, paving macje a fire for them on the beach, and given them dry clothing until they were suffi.piently recovered to return to the ste&mer. As the surf was still rising, no more landing pr shipping could be done. The steamer lay off under the reef until this morning, when, as jibere was no appearance of the sea going flown, the steamer weighed anchor at 5 o'clock, snd proceeded to Napier, arriving here at 11 a.m.—The Napier leaves for Wairoa and Wakaki at 10 o'clock to-night. The Circular Saw Company's s.s. Lord Ashley, paptain Andrews, from Southern Ports, propped anchor, in the roadstead at 1.30 p.m fo-day.' She left Wellington at 10.10 a.m. yesterday, and' experienced very heavy N.E. |ea on the passage. Since her last visit to fhia port, the Ashley has been docked and overhauled at Port Chalmers. Shp leaves for and Auckland this evening. % The s.s. Tararua left th,e Bluff for Melbourne it § 9'?i? y es t er s a y morning.

Phoebe, with the European and American mails via San Francisco, arrived at Wellington, from Msnakau, via Taranaki, Nelson, and Picton, at 430 p.m. yesterday. We learn that the salary to be given to Capt. Kennedy, of the Airedale, as coasting pilot to the San Francisco steamers under the new contract, will be £6OO a year.
