Thursday, Jan. 12. An alluvial gold-field is reported from Coromandel, near the new wharf and part of the old Kapanga Company's ground. Half-a-pennyweight has been obtained to the dish, and a number of claims have been marked out. The Duke of Edinburgh visits us in the Colonial Government p.s. Luna on Friday (to-morrow.) Mr W. T. Swan has announced himself a candidate for re-election by the Thames constituency. Mr C. O'Neill, late a Southern representative, is also a candidate, and Mr 0. F. Mitchell, a member of the Mining Board, is spoken of as a third aspirant to the seat The Customs revenue at Port of Thames for the quarter ending 31st December, 1870, amounts to £2,051. The new Catholic Bishop of New Zealand (Dr. Oroke) addressed a large assembly last night on the present condition of Ireland, and commented upon its improved state in consequence of the legislature of Mr Gladstone's Government. At its close an address of wel come was presented to him from the Hibernian Society. The following returns are to hand today :—Morning Star—Bo tons, 195 ozs.; Moanatairi (fortnight's crushing), 171 ozs; New May Moon 30 tons, 74 ozs; Golden Crown--80 torn*, 140 ozs.
